Marquise Cut Engagement Rings offer something a little special for the prospective bride. The sleek shape of the marquise engagement ring not only produces a flattering line and accentuates the feminity of a womanīs finger, but it also creates the illusion of a bigger diamond. This dual benefit creates shaped diamond engagement rings that are both visually striking and complimentary to the wearer.
The style was created in the first instance by jewellers for King Louis XIV, who requested that a diamond be cut and polished to look like the shape of the Marquise de Pompadourīs beautiful mouth when she smiled. Back to the present time and a member of the Hollywood royalty, Michael Douglas, presented his future wife, Catherine Zeta Jones, with a hugely expensive 10 carat marquise diamond engagement ring.
This type of cut comes from the modified brilliant category which is the most popular of the four fancy cut classes. Their facet count (58) and arrangements are the same as the standard round brilliants but they come in a variety of shapes, including oval and pear. This means that they benefit from similar intensity of fire and brilliance, making them very desireable, but they also have a touch of originality to them to.
Marquise cut diamond rings often use the cut diamond in combination with other smaller stones but can look equally as good as a solitaire. For the stone to look at its best, the ideal ratio for length to width is around 2 to 1. Significantly less or more than this and it starts to effect how the diamond will gather and refract light and hence how radiant it will be. If cut badly, a dark "bow tie" area can appear in the centre of the diamond which is where there is no brilliance. This only really causes a problem though if the area is too large or too dark, as smaller, lighter bow tie shapes may pass unnoticed.
