Mans Diamond Rings
There are now countless handsome men on the big screen and in magazines sporting diamond stud earrings and diamond rings. It is no small surprise then to hear that sales are rising high for men’s diamond jewellery, especially rings. It is no longer considered a fringe market for rappers, gay men and gangsters as it appears that the ordinary man in the street is ready to sparkle and shine.
A recent article in the Wall Street Journal headlined “the latest man thing is bling”. The definition of this term is elaborate jewellery, often encrusted with diamonds. But do not associate the jewellery trade with the market that launched the term “bling bling” as men’s diamond rings are classy rather than flashy.
After Brad Pitt appeared in Ocean’s Twelve wearing a Tiffany silver ring studded with diamonds men actually contacted the shop and asked for a copy. In his most recent film Mr & Mrs Smith which he stars in with Angeline Jolie he is also wearing a diamond ring.
Retailers are crediting Mr Pitt, along other stylish celebrities including P Diddy, Orlando Bloom and Kanye West, for the boom in men’s jewellery.
Tiffany has gone as far as commissioning the designers Paloma Picasso and Elsa Peretti to come up with a range of understated masculine styles in silver and titanium steel studded with diamonds.
Stealth jewellery is another new male fashion trend when a white gold or platinum ring looks plain and simple on the outside but is embedded with diamonds or other precious stones on the inside. For men who feel that stones should not be hidden away but who might still view diamonds as feminine there are black diamonds. These were once considered unattractive (many jewellers still do not stock them) but they now trade at very high prices on diamond markets.
It used to be the case that women wore beautiful designer clothes and expensive diamond rings to demonstrate their partner’s wealth, but nowadays men are much more at ease symbolizing their achievements by wearing their own pieces of jewellery. Or could it be that boys are finally happy to be boys show their flamboyant side with the rock star or Hollywood movie idol in them just waiting to be released.
