Princess Cut Engagement Rings
Princess cut engagement rings are relative newcomers within the world of diamond jewellery. These square cut diamond engagement rings first graced the scene in the early 80´s after the design was established by expert cutters Ygal Perlman, Betzalel Ambar and Israel Itzkowitz. It was created in 1979 following 3 years of extensive research.
The princess cut is second in popularity only to the brilliant round cut diamond and celebrities such as Rod Stewart´s beau, Penny Lancaster, and US Lawyer and TV personality, Star Jones, each own a princess diamond engagement ring.
As one of the modified brilliant category of fancy diamond cuts, the princess cut provides almost the same sparkle as the brilliant round but with a highly contemporary look. A princess cut diamond solitaire engagement ring is extremely elegant and dazzling and is destined to become a timeless item of jewellery.
Forerunners to the princess cut included the Barion cut created by Basil Watermeyer of South Africa and the profile cut. These could only be used for much flatter diamonds though and could not claim to extol the same amount of sparkle and fire from the stone as the modern princess now does.
The princess cut is basically an inverted pyramid which uses 58 facets. Facets are the flat faces of the diamonds and are what reflect and refract the light and give it its brilliance and fire. The ideal ratio for a princess cut diamond is 1.00 : 1.00 which would make it a perfect square. This cut is not only restricted to diamonds, however, and is also used on other precious gemstones such as sapphires and emeralds.
As well as the princess diamond engagement ring, the configuration of princess cut stones also makes them suitable for use in eternity rings. The edges line up to make it look like one continuous line of diamonds, without any gaps in between.
