Year on year, the most popular engagement rings for couples the world over are the brilliant diamond engagement rings. Favoured by celebrities from Barbara Streisand to Christina Aguilera and Mary J Blige, it is the round diamond engagement rings in particular that top the list.
This is because the round brilliant is an ideal cut which achieves the greatest amount of sparkle and fire from a diamond. Shaped like a cone, the round brilliant cut diamond has 58 facets. When designed perfectly, it allows for the maximum amount of light to be drawn into the stone,to be bounced around within it and then refracted and reflected back out again, giving maximum dazzle and wow factor.
The original inventor of the modern round brilliant diamond cut was Marcel Tolkowsky. Part of a Belgian family of diamond cutters, he designed the configuration of facets using mathematical calculations to work out the best way to get both the perfect amount of brilliance and fire from the diamonds. The cut has developed since Tolkowsky first published it in his 1919 book "Diamond Design", but it still remains the benchmark from which jewellers work.
The terms fire and brilliance mean slightly different things. When a professional refers to the "fire" of a diamond they are relating to the coloured light sent back out. This occurs as white light enters into the stone but is then split into its many colours like a rainbow. The facets within the diamond act as a prism defracting the light. The "brilliance" is simply the white light being reflected straight back out through the top of the diamond.
The brilliant round cut diamonds are so spectacular they work incredibly well as single stone engagement rings, but they also look good complimented by shoulders of smaller diamonds, placed either side of the main stone, or even by alternative gemstones such as sapphires or emeralds.
